“I was born in Elgin. I lived in Elgin. And I will die in Elgin.” These are words often quoted by Sydna Davis Arbuckle when describing herself in public and private settings. She was indeed a proud citizen of Elgin, Texas, who passed away on September 2, 2024, in an Austin hospital, which is near to where she planned to die.
For over 84 years, Sydna was part of the community. She graduated from public school, married a local businessman, built her home, raised her children, and was involved in church and civic activities in Elgin. Her love of history led her to become an expert in Elgin’s past. She had a remarkable memory and could recount events, dates, and people with ease and accuracy.
Sydna wrote numerous historical essays, including one about Mary Christian Burleson, the first homesteader in the city. She participated in the preparation of several books—a pictorial history; two compilations of personal stories entitled “Elgin Etc.” and “More Stories”; and history books for the city’s 1972 centennial and 2022 sesquicentennial celebrations.
Sydna was a prolific writer, storyteller, and speaker. As late as August 17, 2024, she made a presentation at the first annual meeting of the Elgin Oral History Project and had the opportunity to share insight about the community. What a blessing her presence was for the participants!
Sydna will be missed by everyone who knew her, not only for her historical knowledge, but also for her interest in people. She made others feel important and was genuinely interested in their well-being. The Elgin Oral History Project appreciates Sydna’s contributions to historical preservation and is committed to continuing her legacy through interviews and stories from residents and former residents shared with the public on social media platforms.
